About SPro Farms
Unlocking the future of sustainable food production.
PRODUCTION
Sustainable Process
Sourcing
We source our feedstock from local food and beverage producers, utilising their 'Surplus Food' that would otherwise be destined for landfill.
Farming
Our farm is located in Dundalk, close to our feedstock suppliers. We use the newest techniques to ensure the insects are produced to the highest standard and are comfortable throughout their life.
Research & Development
We have been working closely with both NUIG & DkIT, to uncover and unlock the potential these insects possess to combat food insecurity and environmental issues.
ABOUT US
Producing a viable alternative to fish meal and soy protein-based feed products.
Founder: Stephen Molloy
I have always had a passion for food, sports, nutrition, health, and ecology. I identified a business opportunity that would allow me to combine my passions and interests in a world -hanging business.
Having attained a Bachelor's Degree in Food Science from University College Dublin, I became extremely interested in food science. This led me to complete a Certificate in Food & Agribusiness Excellence at Dundalk Institute of Technology (DkIT) in 2016.
The idea for SPro Farms really began in 2017 while reading ‘Edible Insects – Future prospects for food and feed security’, FAO 2013 ‘Sustainable Agriculture and Food Security in Asia and the Pacific’ UN ESCAP and ‘Edible Forest Insects Humans Bite Back’ FAO 2010, It became clear that insects are one of the answers to the world’s food security issues.
Utilizing a natural process, the degradation of 'surplus' food by insect larvae, that converts vegetal matter to animal protein and lipids. We can harness a local and sustainable feed ingredient that our food-producing animals can thrive on. (Insect meal is already an EU-approved feed ingredient for farmed fish).
By using food by-product materials from local food and beverage companies as a substrate for the insects we grow, we are closing a loop in the current food production system.
Early scientific trials indicate that our Black Soldier Fly Larvae meal can replace the fish-meal element in the diets of farmed trout, without affecting the quality of the fish.
At Sustainable Protein Farms our objectives are to reduce the use of unsustainable feed ingredients, to improve food security and reduce the carbon footprint of the current feed and food production systems.
